During the previous season, Nicolò Zaniolo made headlines in the Italian press. He was determined to play for AS Roma, but he had a strong desire to wear the Juventus jersey instead. However, AS Roma coach, Jose Mourinho, never approved the idea of joining the rival team. Eventually, Zaniolo left the Italian capital during the January 2023 transfer window. Surprisingly, the 24-year-old midfielder chose Galatasaray over the prestigious Juventus. At that time, transfer experts speculated that Zaniolo made this decision to find another reputable club or join Juventus at a later time.
These speculations have proven to be essentially correct. Zaniolo only played 10 matches for Galatasaray last season, but he managed to score 5 goals, an impressive record. Throughout his young career, Zaniolo had a season with more goals (6) in 2019-2020, but he played 26 matches for AS Roma. Galatasaray has announced that Zaniolo is not included in the squad for the 2023-2024 season due to ongoing transfer negotiations.
Sky Sport transfer expert, Fabrizio Romano, revealed two possibilities for Zaniolo’s departure from Turkey. The first option is for him to join Juventus if the Turin-based team agrees to pay the 35 million euro contract release clause for the 24-year-old midfielder. However, Juventus has remained silent on this matter.
The second option is for Zaniolo to join Aston Villa on a one-year loan with a fee of 3 million euros, and the English club would cover the player’s salary. Additionally, there would be an option to buy Zaniolo for 20 million euros plus a 7 million euro bonus. AS Roma currently holds 15% of Zaniolo’s transfer value. While Villa manager, Unai Emery, is eager to have Zaniolo on his team, the midfielder is not interested in Aston Villa due to the club’s mid-table status in the Premier League. If Juventus isn’t an option, Zaniolo aims to join a top club in Europe.
